Job Details: As one of the pioneers of the banana industry in Northern Australia, the Mackays Group has been growing bananas in the Tully region for more than 70 years. The current 3rd generation (five directors) are together managing Mackays, as it has grown to become Australia’s largest and most significant banana producer. The business has prospered with the hands-on management style of the directors which has seen the business grow into the significant entity it is today.

The Mackays Group Directors recognise the necessity to evolve with the growth of the business. They are embracing the need to corporatise the business model to accommodate the demands of an expanding business, and to offer meaningful career paths for the 4th generation of Mackays. It will also allow the business to expand and diversify into new crops and products which will allow staff more opportunity for training, up-skilling and career development.

The Mackays Group is now setting strategic targets to grow the business over the next 10 years with directors adopting specialised roles as the first stage of the business transition. This transition will be strengthened by the appointment of a CEO to assist with the expansion, and to progressively oversee the appointment of the executive team to manage the business as and when it is commercially viable to do so. This will be a hands-on position with initial responsibility to focus on developing management capabilities across the group, with the priority to improve operational effectiveness with safety, quality, financial performance and sustainability as the key result areas.

Key skills and attributes being sought are;

Proven CEO level commercial management experience in a business undergoing substantial change (ideally over $150M revenue)
Ideally have experience working in a management role in a family owned and operated business
Practical working knowledge of agriculture/horticulture production systems
Strong commercial literacy & experience (financial, regulatory, contractual and compliance)
Proven track record of strong leadership and developing high performing teams
Well-developed strategic thinking and problem-solving ability to execute in a complex environment
High levels of drive and energy with a motivating and inspiring style
High levels of integrity and the ability to represent the values and reputation of the Mackay family
An inclusive and constructive leadership style
